Baker Hughes has secured a contract extension from Petrobras to provide integrated well construction solutions in the Santos Basin, located offshore Brazil.

The energy technology company will deploy its advanced tools and systems across several fields in the basin.

The contract extension covers the use of Baker Hughes’ AutoTrak rotary steerable system, logging-while-drilling tools, and Dynamus extended-life drill bits. These systems are expected to improve access to subsurface reservoirs in deepwater wells.

In a statement to Offshore Technology, Baker Hughes oilfield services and equipment external communications director Brian Reynolds said: “The project will leverage solutions across our well construction (drilling services, drill bits, logging while drilling) and completions, intervention and measurements (cementing, fishing, wireline) product segments.

“This will be executed by our integration & solutions team, which brings these technologies together in an integrated approach to increase operational efficiency and ultimately maximise production.”

Baker Hughes said that the collaboration with Petrobras is intended to increase efficiency and support the exploration and production operations as Brazil continues to develop its pre-salt resources.

The project will proceed with the involvement of Baker Hughes’ Integration & Solutions team, working in conjunction with Petrobras’ wells team.

The collaboration will utilise expertise in various areas including wireline, cementing, wellbore clean-up, and geosciences, aiming to foster improved efficiency in Petrobras' offshore operations.

Baker Hughes oilfield services and equipment executive vice president Amerino Gatti said: “The success of this critical project illustrates the strength and capabilities of Baker Hughes’ comprehensive portfolio, offering an integrated, solutions-focused approach.

“By combining innovative technology with a holistic view of project management, we are setting new standards for efficiency and safety in well construction.”

The agreement builds on a well construction services award made earlier in 2024 with Petrobras to deliver integrated well construction services in Brazil’s Buzios field.

This project included a range of services such as drilling, drill bits, wireline operations, cementing, wellbore clean-up, and geosciences.

In the initial phase of developing the Buzios field, Baker Hughes played a role in providing advanced technology and equipment.

The company supplied essential components including WAG manifolds and over 240km of flexible pipes, designed for production, gas lift, and both water and gas injection at depths of 2,000m.

Alongside these, Baker Hughes delivered drilling, completions, and wireline services.
