Baker Hughes has received an award from Equinor to provide plug and abandonment (P&A) services for the Oseberg East field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

The award follows a multi-year framework agreement signed in March this year covering integrated P&A services.

Under the latest agreement, Baker Hughes' Mature Assets Solutions team will lead the integrated P&A campaign planning phase and provide integrated P&A services across various wells in the North Sea.

Baker Hughes has a history of successful integrated P&A projects, leveraging its innovative portfolio of Mature Assets Solutions to enhance efficiency, expedite timelines and slash total operating costs.

The integrated P&A programme is designed to plug and abandon wells while offering project management services to Equinor.

Baker Hughes executive vice-president of oilfield services & equipment Amerino Gatti said: "Our Mature Assets Solutions experts are well equipped to manage every phase of P&A and optimise operations to meet Equinor’s well abandonment goals.

"As this project unfolds, we will collectively unlock new efficiencies that set new standards for well abandonment solutions, providing cost-effective solutions to Equinor through collaboration, technology, optimisation and integration."

Baker Hughes will set up a P&A Centre of Excellence in Bergen and Stavanger to manage the project, bringing together project managers and subject matter experts to centralise P&A activities in the North Sea.

Baker Hughes' well abandonment portfolio includes technologies such as PRIME Powered Mechanical Applications, Casing Integrity & Cement Mapping, MASTODON casing retrieval system and the Xtreme SJI mechanical slotting tool.

Planning for the Oseberg East field is currently under way, with execution expected to commence in 2026.

The Oseberg Field Centre features three platforms; Oseberg A, B and D, all of which are linked by bridges in the southern part of the Oseberg field. It also includes the unmanned Oseberg H platform, situated 8km north-west of the field centre.

Earlier this year, Baker Hughes secured a significant gas compression technology order for the third phase of Aramco’s Jafurah gas field expansion in Saudi Arabia.
