Japanese construction engineering company Chiyoda has secured a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the North Field West liquefied natural gas (LNG) onshore facilities in Ras Laffan, Qatar.

The contract was awarded by QatarEnergy LNG on behalf of QatarEnergy.

The North Field West project marks the third phase of LNG production expansion at the North Field. It aims to increase Qatar's LNG production capacity to 142 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) upon completion.

QatarEnergy has also been advancing the North Field East and North Field South projects, which are expected to add a combined capacity of 49mtpa.

The North Field West project is projected to increase Qatar’s LNG production levels by nearly 85%. Upon completion, the country’s total hydrocarbon production is set to reach 7.25 million barrels of oil equivalent per day by the end of 2030.

Chiyoda stated: “As a comprehensive engineering company, Chiyoda has provided engineering, procurement, construction, operation and maintenance services in a wide range of business fields including oil and gas, chemicals and petrochemicals in approximately 60 countries and regions around the world since its founding in 1948.

“Chiyoda has executed over 100 projects for clients in Qatar with its local group company Chiyoda Almana Engineering and continues contributing to Qatar's LNG production expansion through this FEED contract.”

In February 2024, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, formally declared the commencement of the North Field West project, highlighting plans to raise the country's LNG production capacity significantly by the end of the decade.

QatarEnergy LNG currently manages 14 LNG trains and is among the largest LNG producers worldwide.

The North Field is located off the north-east coast of the Qatar Peninsula and spans more than 6,000km², roughly half the land area of the State of Qatar.

Developing this vast natural resource has been a key driver of Qatar’s economic growth. Gas from the field is processed into LNG, gas-to-liquids, natural gas liquids and other gas-related products, as well as pipeline gas for export.

In December 2025, Saipem, in collaboration with partner Offshore Oil Engineering, obtained an engineering, procurement, construction, and installation contract from QatarEnergy LNG. The contract pertains to the COMP5 package of the North Field Production Sustainability offshore compression complexes project.
