A fire outbreak at a Mexican state oil company Pemex-operated platform off the southern edge of the Gulf of Mexico has killed two workers, while another is missing.

The fire started at the Nohoch-A platform, which is operated in the Cantarell field, and then spread to a compression platform.

Following the accident, 321 of 328 workers aboard the Processing Centre have been evacuated with the support of seven boats.

Pemex said that six people were injured in the fire.

Pemex general director Octavio Romero Oropeza said that the incident will impact production to the tune of several thousand barrels of crude oil equivalent, reported Reuters.

The company plans to seek a rapid return to production with defined strategies and cut down the time in which it will resume operations in that Processing Centre. It also confirmed that the "fire has already been controlled and work will be done to find the root cause".

Reuters cited the company as saying in a  Twitter post: "Our technicians are studying how to repair the pipelines, interconnections and other works to restore it.”

The field has production of around 170,000 barrels per day, according to the company data.

In March 2023, Reuters reported that Pemex and its partners submitted development plan approval to the Mexican National Commission of Hydrocarbons for the Zama oil field in the Gulf of Mexico.
