Major South Korean shipyard HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has received a Won1.57bn ($1.19bn) contract from Australian energy company Woodside Energy to build a floating production unit (FPU).

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, a subsidiary of HD Korea Shipbuilding, will be responsible for the construction of the 44,000-tonne offshore platform, reported Yonhap News Agency.

With a capacity to produce 100,000 barrels of crude oil and 4.1 million cubic metres of natural gas per day, the FPU is due to be built at HD Hyundai’s shipyard in the south-eastern port of Ulsan.

The platform is due to be deployed at an oil field 180km off the east coast of Mexico in the first half of 2027.

Furthermore, HD Korea Shipbuilding secured orders, worth Won1.55trn in total, to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, four pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) and two liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers.

The 170,000m³ LNG carrier is due to be built by HD Korea Shipbuilding unit Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries for an undisclosed North American shipper.

It will be constructed at Hyundai Samho’s shipyard in the port of Yeongam, with delivery scheduled in stages by 2027.

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard will be responsible for the construction of the PCTCs, which will be delivered by 2027.

The 40,000m³ LPG carriers will be constructed by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for a European shipper. They are due to be delivered in stages by 2026.
