Asia is poised to spearhead global purified terephthalic acid (PTA) capacity additions by 2030 mainly due to escalating demand from the packaging and textile industries. The region maintains its status as a global manufacturing hub, driven by high consumer demand for PTA-based products such as polyester fibres and PET packaging.

Asia is anticipated to add a PTA production capacity of 28.8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) between 2025 and 2030 from nine planned and four announced projects. China, India and Brunei account for the capacity additions in the region with China poised to lead, reaching a capacity of 17.2 mtpa from seven upcoming projects by 2030.

The highest capacity additions in the region are expected from three Chinese projects, each with a capacity of 3 mtpa. Two are in Guangxi: Guangxi Tongkun Petrochemical Qinzhou PTA Plant 1 and Plant 2. Plant 1 is likely to commence operations in 2025 and Plant 2 in 2030. The third project is in Fujian: the Fujian Fuhaichuang Petrochemical Zhangzhou PTA Plant. It is also expected to come online in 2025.

The other major projects in the region are Reliance Industries Dahej Purified PTA Plant 3 in India, expected to come onstream in 2027 with a capacity of 3 mtpa, and the Brunei Hengyi Industries Pulau Muara Besar Purified PTA Plant in Brunei, expected to come onstream in 2029 with 2.5 mtpa.

The Middle East is the other key region expected to add a capacity of 2.5 mtpa by 2030. Capacity additions in the Middle East are from two planned projects in Saudi Arabia: Pan-Asia PET Resin Jazan PTA Plant 1 and Plant 2. Both are located in the Jazan City, and are expected to witness a capacity addition of 1.25 mtpa during the outlook period.
