US DOE awards $5m methane emissions reduction contract to Kuva Systems

The project will showcase workflow automation to achieve cost-effective emission reductions across 175 sites.

Methane emission reduction solutions provider Kuva Systems has been granted a $5m contract by the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Methane Emissions Reduction Program.

The contract will facilitate the enhancement and deployment of Kuva's remote emissions investigation system at 175 oil and gas locations across the nation.

The funding will enable Kuva to further develop its remote emissions investigation system, which provides a cost-effective and scalable method for oil and gas companies to reduce methane emissions.

Kuva Systems CEO Stefan Bokaemper said: "We are thrilled to receive this recognition and support from the DOE's Methane Emissions Reduction Program.”

The technology streamlines the mitigation process by delivering the root causes of emissions to field staff, allowing for quick and efficient action without the need for additional personnel, the company says.

Kuva's system offers operational advantages and assists with emissions accounting and regulatory compliance.

The solution has been sanctioned for regulatory use in regions where advanced technology alternatives are accepted, such as Colorado, New Mexico and Alberta, Canada, and is awaiting approval from the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

The core of Kuva's solution is its proprietary continuous monitoring infrared camera, designed for methane and volatile organic compounds, coupled with a cloud platform for enhanced data management and analysis.

In addition to the MERP contract, Kuva received approximately $3m (C$4.08m) in July 2024 from PrairiesCan via the Business Scale-up and Productivity Program, supplementing $5.7m in funding from earlier investors.

The funding was awarded to expand market share for its automated, image-based methane monitoring solution.
