Renewable diesel production continues to gain importance globally as it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions considerably while serving as a drop-in fuel compatible with existing diesel engines and infrastructure. Furthermore, its longer storage life when compared to petroleum diesel enhances its value in supply chain planning.
As a result, global renewable diesel production capacity is expected to register a sharp growth during the period 2020 to 2030, potentially increasing from 3,210 million gallons a year (mgy) in 2020 to 10,225mgy in 2030. However, most of the upcoming projects are in the early stages of development (feasibility, FEED, and approval) and are yet to begin construction.
North America is expected to lead, adding 894mgy of planned and announced capacity by 2030, with standalone renewable refineries contributing more than 60% and co-processing facilities making up the remainder.
Among countries, the US is expected to witness the highest renewable diesel production capacity of 778mgy from upcoming projects by 2030. The Coffeyville Renewable and Houston Renewable II refineries lead in terms of capacity additions in the country, with 250mgy and 120mgy, respectively.
China follows the US with an upcoming capacity of 302mgy by 2030, entirely from the Beihai Renewable refinery. Beijing Haixin Energy Technology Co Ltd is the operator as well as 100% equity owner of this standalone renewable refinery, which is presently in the feasibility stage.
Curacao stands third with an upcoming renewable diesel production capacity of 199mgy, with the entire capacity expected from a renewable standalone refinery - Bullenbaai Renewable. This project is also in the feasibility stage, with Steamboat Fuels LLC being the owner as well as the proposed operator.
