Wison New Energies has entered into an engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) contract with Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) for a floating production unit (FPU) to be deployed in the third phase of the Sakarya gas field development.

This move is set to boost Türkiye's natural gas production capacity and optimise its energy mix.

The FPU, central to phase three, is designed to withstand the unfavourable deep-water conditions in the Black Sea and navigate the 56m air draft restrictions in the Bosphorus Strait.

This unit is engineered for a gas export rate of 25 million standard cubic metres per day, alongside a produced water treatment capacity of 1,350 standard cubic metres per day.

Additionally, it boasts a monoethylene glycol regeneration and injection capacity of 2,503 cubic metres per day for hydrate inhibition. It is expected to have a minimum design life of three decades.

The Sakarya gas field, situated roughly 170km offshore in the Black Sea, was discovered in August 2020. It holds an estimated 405 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas reserves at a water depth of 2,150m.

Being the largest natural gas discovery in Türkiye, the field is undergoing development in three phases by TPAO.

Phase three development of the Sakarya gas field is a cornerstone of Türkiye's national energy strategy, aiming to improve energy self-sufficiency, reduce reliance on natural gas imports and increase domestic gas supply capacity.

Last April, Wison New Energies won a contract to conduct a detailed feasibility study for a new floating liquefied natural gas facility in Suriname’s Offshore Block 52.
