Wood wins design contract for Bul Hanine EPIC2 project

Wood was previously involved in the Bul Hanine project, having provided Pre-FEED and FEED services directly to QatarEnergy.

Wood has secured a contract from the China Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC) to undertake detailed design work for QatarEnergy’s Bul Hanine EPIC2 project offshore Qatar.

COOEC is a subsidiary of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation.

Utilising extensive subsea engineering and flow assurance knowledge, Wood will assist COOEC in designing an optimal solution for the complex pipeline network. This aims to boost production capacity and prolong asset lifespan.

As part of its scope, Wood will design 25 pipelines, addressing safe interaction with existing infrastructure and managing thermal expansion.

The project also involves conducting crossing analysis for 15 umbilicals and two power cables.

This follows Wood's prior involvement in the Bul Hanine project. The company previously provided pre-front end engineering design (Pre-FEED) and front end engineering design (FEED) services directly to QatarEnergy.

Wood Middle East, Africa & Caspian regional president Gerry Traynor said: “Wood has a strong track record in delivering offshore detailed design and in optimising installation solutions for complex subsea systems.

“By working collaboratively with COOEC, we are bringing together complementary strengths that will help accelerate QatarEnergy’s ambition to extend the field’s life, increase capacity and boost production from these critical, ageing assets.”

In October 2025, COOEC was awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from QatarEnergy, valued at up to $4bn, for the Bul Hanine field.

The EPC contract covers design, procurement, construction, transportation, installation and commissioning services for more than 60 offshore facilities and 40 subsea pipelines and cables.

COOEC deputy director Wu Zhixing said: “COOEC is glad to be QatarEnergy's trusted partner for the Bul Hanine EPIC2 Project.

“This is an important milestone which will build on our continual strong track record in the industry, strengthens our presence and commitment to support the energy landscape in the Middle East, and a testament of COOEC's capability in delivering a trusted EPIC [engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning] solution for mega offshore projects.”

In November 2025, KBR was awarded a contract for detailed engineering services for the same offshore Qatari field. This EPIC project aims to extend the field’s production life and integrate technologies to maximise recovery.

The Bul Hanine field is located approximately 120km east of the Qatari coastline. It was discovered in 1970 and brought on-stream in 1972.
