GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Q1 2017 Global Refinery Maintenance Review – Refinery Maintenance Soars in Asia’, indicates that Asia had the highest refining capacity under maintenance among all the regions in the first quarter of 2017 with 4,158 thousand barrels per day (mbd). North America (2,627 mbd) and Europe (2,377 mbd) had the second- and third-highest refining capacities under maintenance, respectively.

Asia leads among the regions with 3,430 mbd of refining capacity under planned maintenance in the quarter, followed by Europe (1,759 mbd) and North America (1,339 mbd). North America had the highest refining capacity under unplanned maintenance in the first quarter of 2017 with 1,288 mbd. Asia and Europe follow with 728 mbd and 618 mbd, respectively.

GlobalData’s downstream research suggests that among countries, the US (2,312 mbd), India (1,375 mbd), and China (1,087 mbd) had the highest refining capacity under maintenance in the quarter. The US (1,339 mbd), China (1,087 mbd), and India (907 mbd) also lead in terms of refining capacity under planned maintenance in the first quarter of 2017. In terms of refining capacity under unplanned maintenance in the quarter, the US (973 mbd), India (468 mbd), and the Netherlands (377 mbd) had the highest among countries.

Among refineries, Ruwais in United Arab Emirates had the highest refining capacity under maintenance (for both total and planned) in the quarter with 800 mbd. The Mailiao refinery in Taiwan had the second highest with 540 mbd followed by Maoming in China (472 mbd). Lake Charles I, Rotterdam II, and Tula I are the top three refineries in terms of refining capacity under unplanned maintenance in the quarter, with 425 mbd, 377 mbd, and 315 mbd, respectively.

The operators with the highest refining capacity under maintenance (for both total and planned) were Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company, Phillips 66, and Chevron, with 800 mbd, 560 mbd, and 548 mbd, respectively. Chevron, Citgo, and BP were the top operators in terms of refining capacity under unplanned maintenance in the quarter with 548 mbd, 425 mbd, and 377 mbd, respectively.
