Global polypropylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 97.65 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2022 to 159.35mtpa in 2027, an expansion of 63%. 159 planned and announced polypropylene projects are expected to come online, predominantly in Asia, followed by the Middle East.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 42.95mtpa from 84 new build projects, planned and announced. The region is also expected to add 0.38mtpa from the expansion of existing polypropylene projects.

Within Asia, China leads with the largest capacity additions: 22.35mtpa, from 51 planned and announced projects. The main addition to capacity will be from an announced project, the North Huajin refining and petrochemical polypropylene plant in Liaoning province, with a capacity of 1mtpa. It is expected to commence production of polypropylene in 2027.

The Middle East follows with a capacity of 8.62mtpa from 22 new-build planned and announced projects. The region is also expected to add 0.07mtpa from the expansion of an existing project, the Alujain Corporation’s Yanbu polypropylene plant in Saudi Arabia, expected to come online in 2026.
