Total makes net-zero emissions pledge for 2050

By Matthew Farmer

French oil giant Total has become the third of the “Big Six” producers to make a net-zero emissions pledge.

It is aiming to reduce its worldwide direct and purchased emissions, known as scope one and two emissions, to zero by 2050. At the same time, it will also eliminate emissions from use of its energy products, known as scope three emissions. The company has set a target of reducing the emissions intensity of products by 60%

Chairman Patrick Pouyanné said: “Today, we are announcing our new climate ambition to get to net-zero by 2050 – together with society. The board believes that Total’s global roadmap, strategy and actions set out a path that is consistent with goals of the Paris agreement. We acknowledge the positive role of engagement and open dialog with investors as the one we experienced with Climate 100+ along the last months.”

However, climate activists have said the goals are not necessarily aligned with the Paris Agreement. Combined with its ambition to grow as a company, its targets would mean an effective 44% reduction on absolute emissions.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, there is no sign of the green movement slowing. Recently, supply chain companies and organisations have moved to take on more renewable energy work, and the EU has warned that there will be no relenting with its environmental push.
