Global: The global coronavirus death toll passed one million in just nine months since the coronavirus first emerged in Wuhan, China, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University. Global Covid-19 infections have passed 33.3 million.

US: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 7,095,422 cases of the new coronavirus as of 4pm ET on 27 September, an increase of 36,335 cases from its previous count a day earlier, and said the number of deaths had risen by 295 to 204,328.

US Vice-President Mike Pence said Americans should expect cases to rise in the coming weeks. Pence claimed the country has “passed through a challenging time” with its coronavirus crisis, but he added that, “The American people should anticipate that cases will rise in the days ahead.”

India: India reported its smallest daily rise in coronavirus deaths since 3 August, with of 776 new fatalities, data from the health ministry showed on Tuesday, as global deaths crossed one million and infections surged in several countries.

India’s coronavirus case tally passed six million after it reported 82,170 new infections in the last 24 hours, as the pandemic rages across the vast South Asian nation.

Mexico: Mexico upped its estimated Covid-19 deaths to 89,612 on Monday, and boosted estimates of its total number of cases to 870,699, almost 137,000 more than it previously recognised.

New Zealand: New Zealand reported a fourth consecutive day of no new Covid-19 cases spread in the community. There were two new diagnoses of the virus in the government-run isolation facilities for travellers returning to New Zealand, health officials said.

France: French health authorities reported 4,070 new Covid-19 infections over the past 24 hours, sharply down from Saturday’s third-highest ever tally of 14,412 and Sunday’s 11,123.

Spain: Spain’s tally of confirmed coronavirus cases has reached 748,266, rising by 31,785 from Friday’s total, health ministry data showed. The cumulative death toll is up to 31,411 from 31,232 on Friday.

UK: The UK has reported 4,044 new Covid-19 cases, raising the total number of cases to 439,013, government data showed. The daily cases figure was down from 5,693 on Sunday.

Germany: Germany will face more than 19,000 new Covid-19 cases a day by the end of December if the current trend in infections isn’t halted, Chancellor Angela Merkel warned on Monday.

South Korea: South Korea added 38 coronavirus cases in 24 hours, down from 50 a day earlier, according to data from Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. The number of newly confirmed cases was the lowest in seven weeks. The total death tally rose by one to 407.

Vaccine news

Panama: Panama’s health ministry has agreed to spend $1.9m next month in an initial payment for Covid-19 vaccines through the World Health Organization’s COVAX vaccine programme, officials said.

Lockdown updates

Slovakia: Slovakia is set to declare a new state of emergency this week to combat the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Igor Matovic said on Monday following a sharp rise in cases.

Netherlands: A host of new restrictions was introduced in the Netherlands. Travel was limited, bars and restaurants closed early public gatherings discouraged.

UK: The UK government came under pressure to scrap its 10pm closing time rule. The mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, said there needed to be an ‘urgent review of the emerging evidence’ after city centre supermarkets were “packed” after closing time.

France: New rules came into effect in Paris and 11 other French cities. All bars must close at 10pm and remain closed until at least 6am. Restaurants can stay open later.

Kenya: Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the nationwide curfew put in place to curb the spread of the new coronavirus but said it would end two hours later at 11pm local time.

Hong Kong: Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said her government was looking at allowing city residents currently on the Chinese mainland to return home without quarantining for 14 days, providing they first had a negative virus test.
