Oil train

A train carrying crude oil has derailed and caught fire in Lynchburg, Virginia, sending flames and smoke into the air along the James River.

The train was traveling from Chicago to Virginia when around 15 cars were derailed by a cause that has not yet been determined.

Between 12 to 14 CSX tanker cars were involved, three of which caught fire. No injuries have been reported.

CSX said that it is fully supporting the emergency responders and other agencies, meeting the needs of the community and protecting the environment. Officials are working to remove the portion of the train that is blocking workers from leaving Griffin Pipe Foundry situated in the lower basin.

The City of Lynchburg posted on its website that the cause of the derailment has not been determined and people in the general area have been evacuated. Both motorists and pedestrians are being cautioned to avoid the area.
