Mexican state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) said it will restart acrylonitrile production at a petrochemicals plant in Mexico under an agreement with Brazilian firm Unigel.

The 60,000t/y acrylonitrile unit, located at Pemex’s Morelos petrochemical complex in Veracruz, will start operations on Friday, Pemex said.

Pemex has invested $5.3m (70m pesos) in the unit, while Unigel will spend $20m to acquire the acrylonitrile and by-products that can be used in the production of fertilisers.

Unigel is providing technological expertise to improve efficiency of the plant and reduce emissions.

Acrylonitrile is a raw material used in making plastics, synthetic fibres and other goods.
