Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has discovered three oil fields and a large gas field at Al Ghubar South.

The oil discovery in Al Ghubar South that is expected to contain over 1 billion barrels of heavy and oil, according to the Press Trust of India.

Four exploration and appraisal wells were drilled in 2009 to validate the discovery, and the firm will carry out further drilling in 2010 to identify extensions of the field.

PDO also discovered oil at Dafiq West and Anbar in central Oman where 12 wells were dug in a grid of which oil surfaced from five.

The firm has also made a gas discovery at Khulud in the north of PDO’s concession area where gas was found at a depth of more than 5,000m in very tight reservoirs with low permeability and at high temperatures.

Two new wells will be dug in 2010 to assess the gas discovery.
