The Queensland Curtis Liquefied Natural Gas (QCLNG) project, on Curtis Island, near Gladstone, Australia, has been approved by the Queensland Government.

Coordinator-General Colin Jensen completed a review of the environmental impact statement (EIS) for the BG Group-owned project.

Queenland Premier Anna Bligh said that if all the necessary approvals are granted and the company confirms its final investment decision later this year, the project could be shipping supplies from 2014.

QGC, the BG group company responsible for the project, will build the LNG liquefaction and export facility with an initial LNG capacity of 8.5 million tonnes per annum with the potential to expand to 12mtpa.

The project will extract coal seam gas from the Surat Basin and pipe it to Gladstone for liquefaction.

QCLNG will require expansion of QGC’s gas fields and a 340km pipeline from the fields to the Curtis Island facility.
