Manas Petroleum subsidiary Gobi Energy Partners has plugged and abandoned the Ger Chuluu D1 well located in the Ger Chuluu sub-basin, Mongolia.

Drilling operations at the well were stopped after reaching a depth of 600m, as there were no hydrocarbon shows.

This is the second well to be drilled in the Ger Chuluu sub-basin to determine the potential of the sub-basin.

Manas Petroleum president Werner Ladwein said, "While the results in Ger Chuluu were disappointing to all of us, we now have to focus on our Mongolian strategy on the evaluation of the potential of the prospects in the remaining four sub-basins."

Drilling costs for both wells stood within the company’s budget at at $1.9m.

The company initially planned to focus on six sub-basins in Mongolia and has four basins yet to be evaluated.
