Maurel & Prom has discovered oil at its stratigraphic well Sab-Strat 1A, which was drilled on the Sabanero licence in Colombia.
The Sabanero licence covers an area of 434km2 and is located 250km south-east of Bogota in the heavy oil-prolific Llanos Basin, 50km north-east of the Rubiales and Quifa fields.
The well was drilled to a depth of 784.8m north-east of Sab-1 and encountered oil sandstones in the Carbonera C7 formation.
In situ oil samples were taken during the operation obtaining 12° API and the oil-water contact was found at 733.2m (TVDSS), 9.3m below the OWC found in Sab-1, both confirming the field extension to the north-east.
The firm will carry out additional work on the block, consisting of three more stratigraphic wells and appraisal wells in the fourth quarter of 2011 and continue until the third quarter of 2012.
