Notably, the number of hydrogen-related patent applications in the oil & gas industry was 1,583 in Q1 2024, versus 2,206 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 9% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Fuji Oil filed the most hydrogen patents within the oil & gas industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 33 hydrogen-related patents in the quarter, compared with 15 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Air Products and Chemicals with 32 hydrogen patent filings, Air Liquide (31 filings), and Chinese Academy of Sciences (30 filings) in Q1 2024.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 26% share of total patent filings

The largest share of hydrogen related patent filings in the oil & gas industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 26%, followed by the US (16%) and Japan (9%). The share represented by China was 48% lower than the 74% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
