Notably, the number of hydrogen-related patent applications in the oil & gas industry was 1,856 in Q2 2023, versus 2,562 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 10% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that China Petrochemical filed the most hydrogen patents within the oil & gas industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 58 hydrogen-related patents in the quarter, compared with 18 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Toyota Motor with 45 hydrogen patent filings, Air Liquide (39 filings), and Chinese Academy of Sciences (29 filings) in Q2 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 32% share of total patent filings

The largest share of hydrogen related patent filings in the oil & gas industry in Q2 2023 was in China with 32%, followed by the US (15%) and South Korea (13%). The share represented by China was 6% lower than the 38% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
