Notably, the number of hydrogen-related patent applications in the oil & gas industry was 1,466 in Q4 2023, versus 3,051 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 8% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Air Liquide filed the most hydrogen patents within the oil & gas industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 29 hydrogen-related patents in the quarter, compared with 34 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Toyota Motor with 27 hydrogen patent filings, Siemens (21 filings), and Linde (18 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 28% share of total patent filings

The largest share of hydrogen related patent filings in the oil & gas industry in Q4 2023 was in China with 28%, followed by the US (17%) and Japan (10%). The share represented by China was 26% lower than the 54% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
