Asia is poised to spearhead the global acetic acid capacity additions by 2030 due to strong and increasing domestic demand, supported by robust petrochemical infrastructure and targeted investments. Acetic acid, also called ethanoic acid, is a versatile chemical used to manufacture vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), a key component in paints and adhesives. It is also widely used in pharmaceuticals, textiles, inks, dyes, and the food industry.

Asia is anticipated to add acetic acid production capacity of 9.92 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) during 2025 to 2030 from five planned and announced projects, each. China, India and Indonesia are likely to be the only countries that account for the entire capacity additions in the region. China is poised to lead, with a capacity of 5.80mtpa from six upcoming projects by 2030. India and Indonesia follow next, with a capacity of 3.60mtpa and 0.52mtpa, respectively.

However, the highest capacity addition in the region is expected from an announced project in India – “Reliance Industries Jamnagar Acetic Acid Plant”. The project is being planned in the Gujarat state, and is expected to start operations in 2030 with a capacity of 3.0mtpa. Reliance O2C Ltd is the designated operator of this project while Reliance Industries Ltd holds the 100% equity stake.

The next highest capacity addition in the region is from the “Guangdong Shengyuanda Technology Jieyang Acetic Acid Plant”. Proposed in the Guangdong province, China, this project is expected to come online in 2027 with a capacity of 1.50mtpa.

The other major upcoming projects in the region are the “Zhejiang Petrochemical Daishan Acetic Acid Plant”, the “ShengHong Holding Group Lianyungang Acetic Acid Plant” and the “Sichuan Ruibo New Energy Materials Zigong Acetic Acid Plant”. All are being proposed in China, with each of these projects expected to witness a capacity addition of 1mtpa during the outlook period.

Other than Asia, the Middle East and Africa are the only two regions that are expected to witness capacity additions by 2030. About 0.35mtpa of new capacity is likely to be added in the Middle East, supported by one project each in Iran and Oman. While in Africa, a capacity of about 0.28mtpa is likely to be added from an announced project in Egypt.
