Petrobras has announced the discovery of a new oil-bearing interval in the Morpho well, located in the FZA-M-59 ultra-deep water block off the coast of the Brazilian state of Amapá.

Morpho, designated as 1-BRSA-1405-APS, is being drilled in water 2,886m deep.

Drilling at the site was continued after a hydrocarbon discovery was made in August 2026, with the aim of exploring deeper intervals.

According to the company, the latest find was identified through the use of electrical logs and further supported by analysis of rock and fluid samples taken during operations.

Petrobras stated that the newly identified interval expands the understanding of the exploratory potential in the area.

The data will be incorporated into ongoing studies to help assess the petroleum systems and resource prospects within the Foz do Amazonas Sedimentary Basin.

Laboratory analysis is under way to further characterise the new discovery, using information gathered during drilling activities.

Petrobras said that similar studies carried out on the initial August discovery confirmed the good quality of oil present.

Plans are in place to complete drilling activities and conduct further evaluation of the geological formations encountered.

The company said all work is being performed with an emphasis on safety and environmental considerations.

The programme aligns with its long-term plan to replenish oil and gas reserves through new exploration frontiers, contributing to Brazil’s energy demand.

Separately, last month Petrobras signed a long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchase and sale agreement with Cheniere Marketing, a subsidiary of Cheniere Energy.

Under the contract, Petrobras will buy 800,000 tonnes per annum of LNG for 22 years.

The company highlighted that securing these volumes is intended to reduce exposure to spot market volatility, improve risk management and enhance the reliability of its natural gas commitments.

Cheniere Energy operates the Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi terminals in Louisiana and Texas, US, which have combined operating LNG production capacity of around 56 million tonnes per annum.
