Global butadiene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 18.78 mtpa (million tonnes per annum) in 2022 to 24.93 mtpa in 2027 and registering total growth of 33%. 41 planned and announced butadiene projects are expected to come online, predominantly in Asia, followed by the Middle East over the upcoming years.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 3.73 mtpa from 20 new build planned and announced projects.  The region is also expected to add a capacity of 0.10 mtpa from three planned projects or the expansion of existing projects.

Within Asia, China leads with the largest capacity additions: 1.46 mtpa from nine planned and announced projects. The main capacity addition will be from a planned project, the Exxon Mobil Corporation’s Huizhou butadiene plant, with a capacity of 0.27 mtpa. It is expected to commence production of butadiene in 2024.

The Middle East comes next with a capacity of 1.28 mtpa from three new-build planned projects. There is no expansion in the region. Aria Oil and Gas’s Assaluyeh butadiene plant, a planned project in Iran, leads with a capacity of 0.99 mtpa and is expected to come online in 2027.
