Global methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 10.74mtpa (million tonnes per annum) in 2022 to 12.11mtpa in 2027, registering a total growth of 13%. Five planned and announced MDI projects are expected to come online, predominantly in Asia, followed by North America and Europe over the upcoming years.
Asia is expected to add a capacity of 0.40mtpa from one new build planned project, whereas, for the expansion of the existing MDI projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.60mtpa from one planned and one announced project.
Within Asia, the major capacity addition is from a planned project, the Xinjiang Heshan Juli Chemical Yantai MDI plant, and an announced project, the Wanhua Chemical Fujian Company Fuzhou MDI plant, each with a capacity of 0.40mtpa. They are expected to come online in 2026 and 2027.
North America follows next with capacity addition of 0.30mtpa from one planned project. The capacity addition will be from a planned project, BASF Geismar Methylene MDI Plant 2. It is expected to come online in 2025.
Europe is the remaining region with a capacity addition of 0.5mtpa from one planned project, the Covestro Tarragona MDI plant. It is expected to commence production of MDI in 2025.
