Global propylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth between 2023 and 2027, potentially increasing from 150.05mtpa (million tonnes per annum) in 2022 to 208.97mtpa, a total growth of 39%. 158 planned and announced propylene projects are expected to come online, predominantly in Asia, followed by the Middle East.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 39.44mtpa from 65 new build planned and announced projects. Five planned expansions of existing propylene projects will add a capacity of 0.32mtpa.

Within Asia, China leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 29.51mtpa from 45 planned and announced projects. The main capacity addition will be from a planned project, Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Longkou Propylene Plant 1, with a capacity of 2.30mtpa. It is expected to commence production of propylene in 2024.

The Middle East follows next with a capacity of 8.03mtpa from 20 new-build planned and announced projects. The expansion of one announced project will also add a capacity of 0.10mtpa. Advanced Petrochemical Company Al-Jubail Propylene Plant 2, a planned project in Saudi Arabia, leads with a capacity of 0.85mtpa and is expected to come online in 2025.
