Asia’s refinery fluid catalytic cracking units (FCCU) capacity increased from 3,443 million barrels per day (mbd) in 2017 to 3,524mbd in 2022 at an AAGR of 0.8%. It is expected to increase from 3,524mbd in 2022 to 5,285mbd in 2027 at an AAGR of 8.5%.

China, India, Japan, Philippines, and South Korea are the major countries in Asia that accounted for almost entire FCCU capacity in 2022.

China had the highest refinery FCCU capacity in 2022 with 1,738mbd. Other major countries in terms of refinery FCCU capacity were India, Japan, the Philippines, and South Korea with 938mbd, 647mbd, 67mbd, and 56mbd respectively. China witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2017-2022 with an AAGR of 1.3% among the countries, followed by India with 0.5%.

In Asia, eight countries had active refineries with a total FCCU capacity of 3,524mbd in 2022. Jamnagar II (India), Jamnagar I (India), Huizhou I (China), Kawasaki (Japan), and Zhanjiang III (China) were some of the largest active refineries in terms of FCCU capacity in 2022.

By 2027, upcoming FCCUs are expected to commence operations in 26 refineries across Asia. Vadinar (India), Yulong (China), and Hambantota III (Sri Lanka) are the major refineries with upcoming FCCU projects in Asia during the 2023-2027 outlook period.
