Global ethylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the upcoming years, potentially increasing from 184.02 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2018 to 298.19 mtpa in 2030, according to a recent report by GlobalData.  

The report, entitled ‘H2 2019 Global Ethylene Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook – China Leads Globally in Terms of Planned and Announced Ethylene Capacity Additions’ has found that around 167 planned and announced plants are slated to come online primarily in Asia and the Middle East.

In Asia, China is planning to start 38 planned and announced ethylene plants, with a total capacity of about 27.24 mtpa, by 2030. China is expected to see US$25.95 billion in capital expenditure (Capex). Exxon Mobil Corp, China Petrochemical Corp, and Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical Co Ltd are the top three companies accounting for the major capacity additions in China.

In North America, the US leads with planned and announced capacity additions of about 15.37 mtpa by 2030. The country is expected to spend a total of US$10.27 billion by 2030. Major capacity additions will be from Formosa Plastics Group.

In the Middle East, the majority of capacity additions are in Iran, with planned and announced capacity additions of about 10.79 mtpa by 2030. Capex for these plants totals US$7.58 billion during the outlook period. The National Petrochemical Co is the top company accounting for the major capacity additions in Iran.

In Africa, ethylene capacity additions are in Egypt, with planned and announced capacity additions of about 1.70 mtpa by 2030. Capex for these plants totals US$1.40 billion in the coming years. In South America, Brazil plans to spend US$0.62 billion in the coming years to add capacity of 1.30 mtpa, expected to come onstream by 2030.
