Global Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 50.67 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2021 to 53.89mtpa in 2026, registering total growth of 6%.

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) Industry Outlook to 2026 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants’, states that Asia leads, with the largest capacity additions for newbuild and expansion of existing VCM projects by 2026.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 2.61mtpa from five newbuild planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.76mtpa from four planned and announced projects.

In Asia, China leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 2.31mtpa from three planned and one announced project. The main capacity addition will be from a planned project, Tianjin Bohai Chemical Development Company Tianjin Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) Plant, with a capacity of 0.80mtpa, each. It is expected to commence production of Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) in 2022.

North America follows next, with a capacity of 0.86mtpa from one planned project, whereas the expansion in the region is expected to add capacity of 0.80mtpa from one announced project. The Shintech Plaquemine Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) Plant 3 planned project in the US leads, with a capacity of 0.86mtpa, and is expected to come online in 2022.
