A recent report from GlobalData states that global Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber (SBR) capacity could see moderate growth over the next five years. Findings showed there was potential for a seven percent increase, rising from 8.14 mtpa in 2018 to 8.67 mtpa in 2023. Around six planned and announced plants are slated to come online, primarily in Asia and Europe.
Globally, Emulsion Polymerisation is the most common production process used for SBR production. In 2018, it accounted for 54.6 percent of the installed SBR capacity of 8.14 mtpa. This is followed by Solution Polymerisation, which accounted for 38.2 percent of the total installed SBR capacity globally. Others account for 7.2 percent of the total SBR capacity for the forecast period.
The global SBR market
Among regions, Asia leads the way with the largest capacity additions for both upcoming plants and the expansion of existing SBR plants by 2023. For the upcoming new-build plants, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.10 mtpa from one planned plant. For the expansion of existing SBR plants, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.15 mtpa from two planned and announced plants.
Out of the countries considered, India is expected to lead capacity additions, with a capacity of 0.15 mtpa from two planned and announced plants. The main capacity addition will be from announced plants, Indian Synthetic Rubber Panipat SBR Plant, contributing a 0.10 mtpa of capacity. Iran and China follow; expected to add capacity of 0.14 mtpa and 0.10 mtpa respectively.
