The global ammonia capacity is poised to see moderate growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 230.63Mtpa in 2019 to 277.15Mtpa in 2024, registering total growth of 20%.

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Ammonia Industry Outlook to 2024 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants’, states that around 97 planned and announced projects are expected to come online, predominantly in Asia and followed by the Middle East, over the upcoming years.

Among regions, Asia leads with the largest capacity additions for the new build and expansion of the existing ammonia projects by 2024. For the upcoming new build projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 12.28Mtpa from 21 planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion of the existing ammonia projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.21Mtpa from two planned and announced projects.

Among the top ten countries, India leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 8.54Mtpa from 14 planned and announced projects. The main capacity addition will be from a planned project, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Kalol Ammonia Plant 2, contributing 0.79Mtpa. It is expected to commence production of ammonia by 2021.

Iran and Nigeria follow next and are expected to contribute about 8.00Mtpa and 7.39Mtpa from 19 and 10 planned and announced projects respectively. The main capacity contribution for Iran will be from an announced project, FALAT RCF GSFC JV Chabahar Ammonia Plant, contributing 1.05Mtpa while, for Nigeria, the main capacity contribution will be from the announced projects, Nagarjuna Fertlizers & Chemicals Nigeria Koko Ammonia Plant 1 and Nagarjuna Fertlizers & Chemicals Nigeria Koko Ammonia Plant 2, each with the capacity of 0.83Mtpa.

Among Companies, Dangote Industries Ltd lead with the largest capacity additions from planned and announced ammonia projects by 2024, with estimated capacity additions of 2.90Mtpa from four planned projects.
