GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Europe, North America and Former Soviet Union (FSU) Underground Gas Storage Industry Installed Capacity and Capital Expenditure (CapEx) Forecast by Region and Countries including details of All Active Plants, Planned and Announced Projects, 2022-2026’, says that as of September 2022, Europe had 151 active underground gas storage sites with a total working gas capacity of 4,257 billion cubic feet (bcf). The region’s share of the global working gas capacity is 27.3%.

Major active underground gas storage sites in Europe are Emden in Germany as well as Norg (Langelo) and Bergermeer in the Netherlands.

In Europe, as of September 2022, Germany leads with an active working gas capacity of 1,303bcf. Emden, Rehden and Etzel ESE are the major active underground gas storage sites in the country.

Italy ranks second with an active working gas capacity of 634bcf. Fiume Treste I, Minerbio I and Ripalta I are the major active underground gas storage sites in the country.

The Netherlands is the third-highest country with an active working gas capacity of 521bcf. Norg (Langelo), Bergermeer and Grijpskerk are the major active underground gas storage sites in the country.
