The top five companies accounted for 13% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Air Liquide filed the most hydrogen patents within the oil & gas industry in Q2 2024. The company filed 50 hydrogen-related patents in the quarter, compared with 38 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Hyundai Motor with 48 hydrogen patent filings, Kia (46 filings), and China Petrochemical (35 filings) in Q2 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 29% share of total patent filings
The largest share of hydrogen related patent filings in the oil & gas industry in Q2 2024 was in China with 29%, followed by the US (14%) and Japan (7%). The share represented by China was 16% lower than the 45% share it accounted for in Q1 2024.
