The IEC and NEC® Certification Systems

Conformity to the Atex Directive is a necessary and sufficient condition in EU countries for the installation of protected electrical equipment in areas classified as hazardous. In countries that do not belong to the EU, but belong to IECEx, protected electrical equipment is still subject to assessment of conformity to the standards of the IECEx system (International Electrotechnical Commission System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for use in Explosive Atmospheres), both for general parts and for parts related to protection methods, by a third party entity.
