The new issue of Offshore Technology Focus is out now.
We’ve put together a new look for the magazine, with a new structure that should hopefully enhance your reading experience. What’s not changing is our commitment to bringing you top quality coverage of the offshore industry, along with new analysis and insight from GlobalData.
The road to climate neutrality is long but one that oil companies are having to increasingly consider. In this issue, we talk with Maersk Drilling’s head of integrity and projects Caroline Alting about the company’s industry-leading CO2 reduction targets and the wider future of fossil fuels.
On the subject of climate neutrality, Joe Biden is now President-elect of the US. Unlike self-proclaimed ‘oil man’ Donald Trump, Biden has made clear that green energy and climate change are firmly on the agenda for his administration. We dive into what his election might mean for the country’s offshore sector.
Also in the world of carbon emissions and the control or reduction thereof, the Norwegian Government has proposed a $2.7bn full-scale carbon capture and storage project called Longship, part of which will be a joint carbon dioxide transport and storage project between Equinor, Shell, and Total called Northern Lights. The venture will become the first storage site in the world to receive and capture carbon dioxide from industrial sources in several countries and could prove monumental for the region’s climate efforts.

Cutting CO2 from Maersk’s offshore operations: a road worth travelling
The road to carbon neutrality is a long one, but one that must be travelled if the world is to face down the growing climate crisis. Andrew Tunnicliffe talks with Maersk Drilling head of integrity and projects Caroline Alting about its industry-leading CO2 reduction targets and the wider future of fossil fuels.
Open architecture: how IBM, RedHat, and Schlumberger could lead digital innovation in oil and gas
IBM, RedHat, and Schlumberger have announced plans to collaborate on a cloud-based communication platform that builds on and unifies many separate networks that have already popped up in the oil and gas sector. JP Casey speaks to IBM global managing director of energy, natural resources, and manufacturing Manish Chawla about whether such a collaborative approach could be the future of the sector.
Shaky shores ahead: can a new oilfield bidding round rebound Nigerian oil?
The Nigerian Government is counting on a new marginal bid round, the first in over two decades, to boost national revenue and reinvigorate the country’s ailing extractives sector. Demand for licences has been high, but will it be enough? Heidi Vella takes a look.
Joe Biden is president-elect: what now for US oil and gas?
The wait is finally over: Joe Biden has won the contentious 2020 US elections. He will be a very different leader to self-proclaimed ‘oil man’ Donald Trump, that we know, but what exactly can the offshore oil and gas sector expect? Heidi Vella reports.
Covid-19, climate change, and the UK’s commitment to oil and gas drilling
Last year, the UK’s Oil and Gas Authority offered 113 licence areas to oil companies to explore for new offshore projects in the North Sea, a move not without controversy. JP Casey asks whether financial gain and environmental stewardship can be balanced in the North Sea.
A question of trust: how the offshore industry is pioneering human-to-robot communication
Researchers at the ORCA Hub have developed MIRIAM, a new form of communication that allows users to ask robots questions and understand their actions in real time. Julian Turner talks to Helen Hastie, professor of computer science at Heriot-Watt University and an ORCA work package lead.
Capturing the light: inside Norway’s Northern Lights CCS project
The Norwegian Government has proposed a $2.7bn full-scale carbon capture and storage project called Longship, part of which will be a joint CO2 transport and storage project between Equinor, Shell, and Total called Northern Lights. Yoana Cholteeva takes a look at the venture and what it could mean for the region.
The oil and gas energy transition: is cutting costs enough?
While oil continues to dominate global energy production, the sector is not without inefficiencies. In response, some of the world’s largest majors have embarked upon cost-cutting measures, yet, as JP Casey finds out, it remains to be seen if streamlining operations alone will yield significant change.
Preview – Offshore Technology Focus February 2021
