The global oil & gas industry noticed a 0.2% drop in IT hiring activity in August 2022 over the previous month, led by Ecopetrol’s 9.58% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity increased 4.85% when compared with July 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 5.46% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in August 2022, down 0.59% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of August 2022 were 6.44% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 11.26% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 35.87% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in August 2022, a 4.66% growth over the previous month. Computer and Information Analysts came in second with a share of 21.95% in August 2022, up 27.32% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 21.42% share in August 2022, a growth of 9.64% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with an 11.96% share in August 2022 and a rise of 5.42% over July 2022.

Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in August 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 13.81% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during August 2022 over July 2022.

Ecopetrol posted 234 IT jobs in August 2022 and registered a rise of 3.08% over the previous month, followed by Koch Industries with 204 jobs and a 2.39% decline. Shell with 198 IT jobs and Hera with 100 jobs, recorded a 5.26% decline and a flat growth, respectively, while PI Industries recorded an 11.39% rise with 88 job postings during August 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in August 2022 with a 40.83% share, which marked a 10.41% rise over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 26.29%, registering a 0.77% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 19.86% share and a 22.47% rise over July 2022.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 10.97% and a month-on-month rise of 1.52%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 2.05%, registering a 28.21% increase over the previous month.
