The global oil & gas industry noticed a 0.3% rise in IT hiring activity in September 2022 over the previous month, led by Koch Industries 9.55% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity increased 2.03% when compared with August 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 5.36% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in September 2022, down 0.41% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of September 2022 were 5.13% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 8.5% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 35.75% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in September 2022, a 4.45% growth over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 21.66% in September 2022, up 7.96% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with a 19.88% share in September 2022, a decline of 3.95% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 13.38% share in September 2022 and a rise of 16.5% over August 2022.

Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in September 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 25.1% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during September 2022 over August 2022.

Koch Industries posted 257 IT jobs in September 2022 and registered a rise of 25.98% over the previous month, followed by Shell with 212 jobs and a flat growth. Reliance Industries with 193 IT jobs and Ecopetrol with 173 jobs, recorded a 338.64% growth and a 27% drop, respectively, while Sasol recorded a 65.22% rise with 152 job postings during September 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in September 2022 with a 44.82% share, which marked a 15.96% rise over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 29.69%, registering a 17.5% month-on-month growth. Europe was the third leading region with a 15.46% share and a 17.79% drop over August 2022.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 8.18% and a month-on-month drop of 18.82%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.86%, registering a 3.85% decrease over the previous month.
