The global oil & gas industry noticed a 0.7% rise in IT hiring activity in October 2021 over the previous month, led by Royal Dutch Shell’s 10.29% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity declined 5.55% when compared with September 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 5.71% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in October 2021, up 0.38% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of October 2021 were 1.92% higher when compared with the previous month.

The increase was a result of 3.55% lower job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 57% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in October 2021, a 2.41% decline over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 14.33% in October 2021, down 10.21% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 12.48% share in October 2021, a decline of 14.29% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with an 8.71% share in October 2021 and a drop of 9.36% over September 2021.

Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in October 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 26.99% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during October 2021 over September 2021.

Royal Dutch Shell posted 183 IT jobs in October 2021 and registered a rise of 84.85% over the previous month, followed by Baker Hughes Holdings with 149 jobs and a 16.41% growth. Exxon Mobil with 144 IT jobs and Yara International with 104 jobs, recorded a 13.25% decline and a 40.54% rise, respectively, while BASF recorded a 54.17% rise with 74 job postings during October 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in October 2021 with a 43.73% share, which marked a 0.26% rise over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 28.95%, registering a 7.87% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 20.97% share and an 8.58% drop over September 2021.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 4.05% and a month-on-month drop of 2.7%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 2.14%, registering a flat growth over the previous month.
