The global oil & gas industry noticed a 3.7% rise in IT hiring activity in May 2022 over the previous month, led by Koch Industries 13.58% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity increased 1.51% when compared with April 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.49% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in May 2022, up 0.26% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of May 2022 were 8.37% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 14.31% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 43.57% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in May 2022, a 10.31% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 15.25% in May 2022, down 6.48% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with a 15.14% share in May 2022, a growth of 7.09% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 13.75% share in May 2022 and a drop of 5% over April 2022.

Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in May 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 17.89% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during May 2022 over April 2022.

Koch Industries posted 244 IT jobs in May 2022 and registered a drop of 17.29% over the previous month, followed by Ecopetrol with 220 jobs and a 5.77% growth. Shell with 192 IT jobs and Sasol with 101 jobs, recorded a 44.51% decline and a 29.49% rise, respectively, while Exxon Mobil recorded a 13.54% drop with 83 job postings during May 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in May 2022 with a 43.13% share, which marked a 1.15% drop over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 26.43%, registering a 19.35% month-on-month decline. South & Central America was the third leading region with a 15.47% share and a 3.73% rise over April 2022.

In the fourth place was Europe with a share of 13.75% and a month-on-month drop of 3.89%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.22%, registering a 31.25% decrease over the previous month.
