The global oil & gas industry noticed a 4.3% rise in IT hiring activity in November 2021 over the previous month, led by Royal Dutch Shell’s 9.76% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity increased 4.46% when compared with October 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 5.82% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in November 2021, up 0.27% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of November 2021 were 5.3% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 9.02% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 53.65% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in November 2021, a 2.87% decline over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 16.3% in November 2021, up 20.83% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with an 11.7% share in November 2021, a decline of 4.98% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with an 8.79% share in November 2021 and a drop of 5.49% over October 2021.

Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in November 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 7.51% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during November 2021 over October 2021.

Royal Dutch Shell posted 191 IT jobs in November 2021 and registered a drop of 2.55% over the previous month, followed by Exxon Mobil with 129 jobs and a 13.42% decline. Baker Hughes with 129 IT jobs and Yara International with 103 jobs, recorded a 14% decline and a 3.74% drop, respectively, while Air Products and Chemicals recorded a flat growth with 64 job postings during November 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in November 2021 with a 48.24% share, which marked a 9.39% rise over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 27.44%, registering a flat month-on-month growth. Europe was the third leading region with a 19.67% share and a 3.99% drop over October 2021.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 3.53% and a month-on-month drop of 6.76%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.12%, registering a 43.59% decrease over the previous month.
