Adani TotalEnergies Biomass Limited (ATBL), a subsidiary of Adani Total Gas, has announced the commencement of phase one operations at its Barsana Biogas Plant in Uttar Pradesh, India.

The Barsana Biogas Plant, situated within the premises of Shre Mataji Gaushala in the Mathura district, is a three phased project, with a total capacity of to process 600 tonnes per day (tpd) of feedstock.

Upon completion of all three phases, the facility is expected to produce over 42tpd of compressed bio gas (CBG) and 217tpd of organic fertiliser.

Adani Total Gas will invest over Rs2bn (~$24m) in the Barsana Biogas project, which marks its foray into CBG production.

It is anticipated to become India’s largest agricultural waste-based bio-CNG plant when it reaches its full design capacity at the end of phase three.

By employing advanced anaerobic digestion technology, the facility transforms organic matter into renewable biogas, thereby mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing dependency on conventional fossil fuels.

ATGL executive director and CEO Suresh P Manglani said: “We are excited to unveil our endeavor towards contributing in sustainable energy production. In addition to producing CBG, the plant yields high-quality organic fertiliser, contributing to circular economy principles and agricultural sustainability.

“The setting up and initiation of CBG production fully aligns with our promoters’ – Adani Group and TotalEnergies – broader sustainability goals and by investing in renewable energy like CBG.”

Earlier this year, Adani Total Gas formed a partnership with INOXCVA to enhance the liquified natural gas (LNG) infrastructure in India.

The collaboration agreement designates each entity as a “preferred partner,” ensuring streamlined provision of LNG and liquefied-to-compressed natural gas equipment and services.

Under the alliance, the companies will also explore cooperative ventures that will support the expansion of India’s LNG network.
