Arabian Drilling Company has awarded German company Siemens a contract to modernise the full drilling-drives package and cooling system of its jackup rig.

The modernised drilling-drives lineup, including auxiliaries and controls, will be installed on an offshore jackup rig for an undisclosed customer in the Middle East.

Besides the addition of new features, the upgrade will enable the customer to meet safety standards.

Siemens said that it has scheduled the new system’s delivery for early next year.

It will engineer, design, manufacture and deliver the fully integrated modernisation based on its BlueDrive technology.

Siemens’ solution Master2Blue will use the existing footprint, cable network and communication points to quickly and safely install and commission the system.

It has designed the solution to meet offshore requirements and for energy distribution in drilling systems.

The environmentally friendly multi-drive solution allows for easier and more reliable operations with low emissions.

Siemens Offshore Solutions Business Development director Thomas Steenberg said: “As the reactivations of stacked and un-utilised drilling rigs are increasing, Siemens stands fully ready to modernise offshore rigs and ships to make them safer and more energy-efficient.

“By using the latest drilling and propulsion drives technology, customers can assure their rigs and ships remain at the highest level of supportability for many years to come.”

Siemens said that it also provides other modernisation solutions. These include the company’s fully integrated and advanced energy storage systems.

In May 2017, Siemens and Darktrace signed a strategic partnership to provide modern cyber defence solutions for operational technology (OT).
