Canada to support six organisations on oil spill research

The Government of Canada has decided to support six international organisations with their research projects on mitigating the environmental impacts of oil spills.

The Government of Canada has decided to support six international organisations with their research projects on mitigating the environmental impacts of oil spills.

The initiative is part of the government’s Oceans Protection Plan, which aims to protect Canadian coasts and waterways from potential oil spills.

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Johns Hopkins University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, SINTEF Ocean, Texas A&M University and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution were selected under the programme.

The six organisations will receive more than $3.09m (C$4.1m) in grants for oil spill research projects.

The scope of research includes using computer modelling to predict the movement of oil spilled in the ocean and other waterways and the effectiveness of burning of oil spilled at sea as well as utilising bio-based agents to stop further spreading of oil spills.

“These new partnerships will lead to more scientific knowledge, innovative response measures and advanced technologies that will help minimise the impacts of oil spills.”

These projects are part of the C$45.5m Multi-Partner Research Initiative announced in 2018 to facilitate collaboration among oil spill experts.

Canada minister of fisheries, oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Jonathan Wilkinson said: “Collaboration is key when working to respond to oil spills. These new partnerships will lead to more scientific knowledge, innovative response measures and advanced technologies that will help minimise the impacts of oil spills on our marine and coastal waters.

“We are working together to keep our oceans and our coasts clean, healthy and safe.”

The Multi-Partner Research Initiative supports different but interrelated research projects aiming to streamline response measures for oil spills. The initiative is expected to provide Canada with necessary knowledge to contain, clean and mitigate environmental impact on oil spills.
