Esso Australia, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Australia and operator of the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture (JV), has completed the Kipper Compression project.
The Kipper Compression project is a collaborative effort between Esso and Woodside Energy, with each holding a 50% stake in the venture.

It is a significant development in sustaining crucial natural gas supplies for the Australian domestic market. The project involves installing compression facilities on the West Tuna platform to maintain production from the Kipper field as reservoir pressure declines.
The project’s completion is essential to maintain the continuous supply of natural gas to Australia and support production at the Gippsland Basin and Longford Plants.
ExxonMobil Australia chair Simon Younger said: “The successful completion of the Kipper Compression Project enables the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture to maintain production of critical natural gas supplies from the Kipper field, an integral part of our production system.
“Accessing new gas supplies or maintaining gas production is not simply a matter of flicking a switch; our project and operations teams put in more than one million hours to ensure its safe completion and on schedule.”

He also pointed out that industries like bricks, critical minerals, fertiliser, glass, recycling and steel rely on natural gas due to the lack of viable alternative energy or feedstock options.
Esso and its JV partners have invested in the Bass Strait for more than six decades to enhance Australia’s energy security.
The company noted that the Kipper Compression Project reflects its continues investment in the region, supporting the local economies where the company’s workforce resides and operates.
