The tender round was launched in 2020 by New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals, which is part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Greymouth has secured Petroleum Exploration Permit (PEP) 60749 for 52km² area in the south-east of New Plymouth.

Riverside has been granted PEP 60742 for 53km² area east of Eltham onshore Taranaki.

The permits, which are effective from 1 July, have a ten-year period and are subject to work programme conditions.

The acreage offered for oil and gas exploration has been restricted to the onshore Taranaki region in compliance with the New Zealand Government’s 2018 order to ban drilling outside Taranaki.

The ruling also restricts future block offers onshore Taranaki.

The latest permits, however, exclude any land listed in Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act, including national parks, nature reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries, or World Heritage sites.

It also does not include areas identified in section 3.1 of the Petroleum Programme as areas of importance to Māori. These include Mount Taranaki and the Pouakai, Pukeiti and Kaitake Ranges.

New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment said in a statement: “Since Block Offer 2018 new petroleum exploration permits have also been granted subject to a new engagement condition that explicitly requires permit holders to engage with iwi on an ongoing basis.”

Last year, Todd Energy’s Todd Exploration Management Services secured ten-year onshore exploration permit covering 105km² area east of Inglewood onshore Taranaki.

The permit has been granted as a result of a Blocks Offer 2018 tender.
