Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has partnered with bp to enhance production at the Mumbai High oilfield, a multi-layered field located in the Mumbai offshore area in India.

The collaboration aims to address the field’s production decline and promote a “robust” growth trajectory.

BP will serve as the technical services provider (TSP) and receive a fixed fee for two years, followed by a service-based fee on increased oil and gas production.

The company aims to enhance oil recovery at Mumbai High through sub-surface reviews, system optimisations and better reservoir management.

The move will elevate domestic production, benefitting India’s economy, and provide higher service fee returns for bp, the UK oil and gas major said.

BP India head of country and chairman Kartikeya Dube said: “This opportunity further underpins our commitment to exploration and the production of oil and gas in India, creating value for both companies and helping support the country’s vision for energy independence and security.”

Under the agreement, ONGC will maintain ownership and operational control.

The initiative will begin with bp deploying technical experts by March 2025, supported by a joint management team to ensure “seamless” execution.

India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Puri said: “While ONGC continues to retain the ownership of the field, this unique technology collaboration with bp’s expertise in managing complex mature reservoirs and implementing advanced recovery technologies and best operational practices will help in enhancing the production from this iconic field.”

ONGC chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh added: “By engaging a TSP, ONGC aims to realise the enhanced potential of the Mumbai High field by leveraging cutting-edge technologies and global best practices, securing its future contribution to India’s energy landscape.”

In January 2025, bp secured a bid to operate ONGC’s Mumbai High field, providing technical services to boost production by up to 60%.
