Chevron Philippines has reported that an oil spill at its Batangas terminal in the Philippines has been contained.

About 100l of bunk fuel had been discharged into Batangas Bay at the time of loading fuel to the company’s time-chartered vessel M/T Sunrise Sampaguita.

"We are cooperating with the relevant government authorities, including the Philippine Coast Guard, about the incident."

After observing the leak, the company immediately suspended loading operations. Oil was starting to leak and spread out on the water.

Out of the total bunk fuel that leaked, 60l of spilled bunker fuel and five drums of oily water mixture have been recovered from the sea as well as wharf platform.

An initial investigation found that the spill was due to leakage that occurred at the distribution pipeline installed from the pier to the depot.

Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog Marine Environmental Protection Unit reached the area in order to conduct an inspection and further assess and monitor the area.

Chevron Philippines manager of policy, government, and public affairs Raissa Bautista said: "We are cooperating with the relevant government authorities, including the Philippine Coast Guard, about the incident."

The cause of the incident is yet to be determined.
