A fire caused by a gas leak has broken out at the offshore Gunashli-19 platform of Azerbaijan's state oil company SOCAR.

The fire on 26 September did not cause any casualties and was extinguished the following morning.

SOCAR was quoted by Azernews.az as stating: “Measures were taken in accordance with safety procedures.

"Measures were taken in accordance with safety procedures."

“Security of 49 employees of the platform was ensured.”

The fire occurred during repair work being carried out in the well N71.

Gunashli is one of the oldest offshore gas fields in Azerbaijan.

SOCAR is developing the field’s shallow portion while BP-led consortium is developing its deepwater part in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli block of fields.

The fire was extinguished by fire-fighting vessels of the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company, and Vortex-5 and Vortex-7 vessels of the Service of Fire Safety of Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES), reported Azernews.az.

An investigation is being carried out to determine how the fire started.
