Petronas, through its division Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), has entered into two strategic memorandums of understanding (MOUs) aimed at advancing technology and operational efficiency within Malaysia’s exploration and production (E&P) sector.
The agreements were formalised at ADIPEC 2024, held on 4–7 November in Abu Dhabi.
The first MOU with Schlumberger WTA Malaysia (SLB) is set to bolster technical capabilities through AI, machine learning (ML) and generative AI technologies.
This partnership is expected to revolutionise MPM’s data platform by integrating AI-driven solutions, thereby enhancing the management and interpretation of subsurface data.
It is expected to deliver added value to Malaysia’s offshore operations and emerging Petroleum Arrangement Contractors (PACs).
The second MOU, involving Velesto Drilling (Velesto) and NOV, focuses on deploying NOV’s drilling automation system and robotics technology on Velesto-operated rigs.

This partnership also aims to encourage the adoption of innovative technologies across Malaysia’s upstream sector.
MPM senior vice-president Datuk Ir. Bacho Pilong said: “These strategic collaborations with SLB, Velesto and NOV signify a leap forward for MPM and Malaysia’s E&P sector. By embracing digital transformation, we are not only enhancing operational efficiency but also paving the way for next-generation data solutions that bring substantial value to our PACs, especially emerging players and new investors.
“Through these partnerships, we build a strong ecosystem to enable access to our PACs. The discussion to pilot the SLB’s data and AI platform has already generated strong interest among our Small Field Asset and Late Life Asset PACs.”
Petronas continues to demonstrate its commitment to securing a sustainable supply of oil and gas for Malaysia’s energy needs. The company is also focused on advancing low-carbon and low-emission operations, with a goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
In a related development, Petronas has also announced a collaboration with the European Space Agency and Amazon Web Services to further the application of AI and ML technologies in the oil and gas industry in Malaysia.
This collaboration is set to expedite exploration activities in the Malay Basin and enhance the data capabilities of the Petronas myPROdata platform.
